Movie Maker

Reflection: How would I use DIGITAL STORYTELLING in the Class?

Digital Storytelling is one of the best classes I’ve taken this summer! I’m learning about different forms (wiki, free play music, etc.) of technology. I would like to use digital storytelling to tell children about upcoming units/topics, recreate our version of a particular story, and even use it to create math word problems. I would try to incorporate movie maker in at least two units this school year.
I think movie maker is a great tool to help improve students’ critical thinking skills. Not only does a child become aware of using technology, but they have to “think about” what to include in their movie. I would have students first do a class movie incorporating our “beginning of the year and mid-year celebrations”, like student of the day, learning areas and people in the school, healthy choices unit, book talk, etc. After students are able to independently complete their section for class movies, I would have students work in groups/pairs/independently to create a section for our movie or create their own short film.
For example, instead of each child sharing information twice (to the class and parents), they could share once (to the class) and we could make a class video of each child sharing their information. This will also aide in keeping our presentation to a particular length/time. This would be a great way to introduce parents to our class members.
This would also be a great end-of-year activity for students to share what they’ve learned, enjoyed, accomplished during the year. We could play the movie during our “graduation celebration”.
This is a great way to encourage students to communicate, cooperate, and think about communicating to a wider audience. It will also help me check for their understanding of our units and concepts being taught.
Thankfully, this class has opened my mind to endless possibilities for digital storytelling. Hopefully, we will be able to post some of our “creations” on our school’s site.
